Indications and Dosage
Ophthalmic
Ocular infections Adult: Apply thin strip (approximately 1 cm) of 1% oint to the conjunctiva every 2-4 hrs or more frequently. Child: Same as adult dose. Topical/Cutaneous Minor skin infections Adult: Apply 3% oint to affected area 1-2 times/day.
Child: Same as adult dose. |

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity; systemic lupus erythematosus; severe renal impairment; pregnancy, lactation; child ≤12 yrs.

Special Precautions
Myasthenia gravis; avoid direct sunlight; elderly; hepatic impairment.

Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity and photosensitivity reactions; abnormal pigmentation of the eye; myopia.

Drug Interactions
Preparations containing divalent and trivalent cations; Na bicarbonate, colestipol; kaolin-pectin; potentially hepatotoxic drugs; diuretics, methoxyflurane; other potentially nephrotoxic drugs; oral anticoagulants; atovaquone; thiomersal (ocular inflammation); OC (decrease effect); retinoids (increased risk of benign intracranial hypertension).
Potentially Fatal: Increased toxic effects of ergot alkaloids and methotrexate. |

Food Interaction
Dairy and milk products.

Lab Interference
May interfere with determination of urinary catecholamines or glucose. Increase in liver enzyme values.

Action
Description: Chlortetracycline prevents the binding of aminoacyl transfer RNA, thus inhibiting protein synthesis and cell growth. It has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity which includes chlamydias, rickettsias, spirochetes, many aerobic and anaerobic gm-ve and gm+ve pathogenic bacteria and some protozoa.
