Beclometasone is used to prevent the symptoms of asthma.
This medicine belongs to a group of medicines called "corticosteroids". Corticosteroids reduce the swelling in the airways of your lungs. This helps relieve chest tightness, wheezing and cough so that you can breathe more easily.
Beclometasone is a preventive asthma medicine which must be used regularly long-term.
Use Beclometasone exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Beclometasone is available as different types of devices, such as inhaler or autohaler.
Make sure you know how to use the specific device you have been given. If you have problems or do not understand the instructions, ask your doctor or pharmacist to show you how to use it.
Always rinse your mouth and throat after using your inhaler or autohaler.
Do not wash or put any part of your inhaler or autohaler in water.
Do not share your inhaler or autohaler with others as it could spread infection.
Beclometasone must be used regularly for it to be effective. Continue using Beclometasone even when you feel better. Do not stop using it unless instructed by the doctor.
If you miss a dose of Beclometasone, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Take your next dose at the usual time.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not use Beclometasone to relieve a sudden attack of breathlessness. Beclometasone cannot relieve an acute asthma attack. Use your fast-acting reliever inhaler prescribed by your doctor to relieve such attacks.
Inform your doctor if you have:
- other lung disease or history of tuberculosis (TB)
- bone disease e.g. history of osteoporosis
- heart disease
- thyroid disease
- diabetes
- stomach disease e.g. peptic ulcer
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness disorder)
- eye disease e.g. glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
- seizures
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery or dental work, inform your doctor or surgeon that you are being treated with Beclometasone inhalation. If you have been given a steroid card, carry it with you at all times.
Your doctor may need to check the height of your children regularly.
Avoid exposure to anyone who is infected with chickenpox or measles. If you are exposed to these infections, contact your doctor immediately.
Beclometasone inhalation may cause sore throat, hoarse voice, cough, colds and headache.
If you develop wheezing after inhalation stop the medicine and alert your doctor immediately.
It may also cause a yellowish coating on your tongue and the inside of your mouth. This is a fungal infection known as oral thrush. Rinse your mouth with water after you use Beclometasone inhalation to minimise this problem.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe or if you experience any other side effects.
Inform your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines:
- antifungal medicines e.g.ketoconazole, itraconazole
- antibiotics e.g. erythromycin, clarithromycin
- HIV medicines e.g. nelfinavir, ritonavir
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Beclometasone.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Throw away the canister after the indicated number of doses is used up.
