Famotidine
Indications/Uses
Active duodenal & benign gastric ulcer. Short-term treatment for symptomatic relief of GERD. Maintenance therapy for duodenal ulcer. Pathological hypersecretory conditions eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, multiple endocrine adenomas.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult ≥18 yr Duodenal & gastric ulcer 40 mg daily at bedtime for 4-8 wk. Maintenance dose: 20 mg daily at bedtime. GERD 20 mg bd for 6 wk. Esophagitis including erosions & ulcerations, accompanying symptoms due to GERD 20-40 mg bd for up to 12 wk. Pathological hypersecretory conditions eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, multiple endocrine adenomas 20 mg every 6 hr. Max: 800 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to famotidine or other H2-receptor antagonists.
Special Precautions
Exclude gastric malignancy prior to therapy. Moderate & severe renal insufficiency (CrCl <10 mL/min). Not to be used during pregnancy. Lactation. Childn. Elderly
Adverse Reactions
Headache, dizziness, constipation, diarrhea.
Drug Interactions
Decreased bioavailability w/ antacid. Inhibited renal tubular secretion w/ probenecid.
