Noradrenaline bitartrate
Indications/Uses
BP control in acute hypotensive states eg, pheochromocytomectomy, sympathectomy, poliomyelitis, spinal anaesth, MI, septicaemia, blood transfusion & drug interactions. Adjunctive treatment of cardiac arrest & profound hypotension.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Acute hypotensive states Initially 2-3 mL/min IV infusion. Maintenance: 0.5-1 mL/min. Duration: Up to 6 days.
Contraindications
Patients hypotensive from blood vol deficits; mesenteric or peripheral vascular thrombosis; profound hypoxia or hypercarbia. Concomitant use w/ cyclopropane & halothane anaesth.
Special Precautions
Occlusive vascular diseases eg, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, diabetic endarteritis, Buerger's disease. Monitor BP during treatment. Avoid abrupt w/drawal. Prolonged use. Avoid catheter tie-in technique; extravasation into tissues. Avoid contact w/ alkalis & oxidising agents. Patients receiving MAOIs or triptyline- or imipramine-type antidepressants. Pregnancy & lactation. Avoid inj into leg veins of elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Ischaemic injury; bradycardia, arrhythmias; anxiety, transient headache; resp difficulty; extravasation necrosis at inj site.
Drug Interactions
Increased cardiac autonomic irritability w/ cyclopropane & halothane anaesth. Severe, prolonged HTN w/ MAOIs or triptyline- or imipramine-type antidepressants. Incompatible w/ alkalis & oxidising agents, barbiturates, chlorpheniramine, chlorothiazide, nitrofurantoin, novobiocin, phenytoin, Na bicarbonate, Na iodide, streptomycin, sulfadiazine, sulfafurazole.
