Indications/Uses
Anxiety, acute alcohol w/drawal symptoms, pre-op procedures to relieve anxiety & tension; adjunct prior to endoscopic procedures; short-term adjunctive therapy in convulsive disorder; adjunct for skeletal muscle spasm; familial, senile or essential action tremors.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Usual dose: Anxiety 2-10 mg bd-qds. Sedative-hypnotic acute alcohol w/drawal 10 mg tds-qds during the 1st 24 hr, deceased to 5 mg tds-qds as needed. Anticonvulsant 2-10 mg tds-qds. Skeletal muscle relaxant 2-10 mg tds or qds. Elderly or debilitated patient 2-2.5 mg once or bd, increased gradually as needed & tolerated. Childn ≥6 mth 1-2.5 mg, 40-200 mcg (0.04-0.2 mg)/kg or 1.17-6 mg/m2 tds or qds, increased gradually as needed & tolerated.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Acute close-angle glaucoma, psychotic disorder, myaesthenia gravis, severe chronic obstructive disease.
Special Precautions
Anaphylaxis & angioedema may occur at the beginning of treatment. Patients w/ arteriosclerosis, resp dysfunction. Complex sleep-related behaviours may occur. W/drawal should be gradual. May be habit forming on prolonged use. Avoid alcoholic beverages. Renal dysfunction. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn up to 6 mth. Elderly & debilitated patients.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, lightheadedness & ataxia.
Drug Interactions
Diazepam & antacids, carbamazepine, cimetidine, CNS depressants, INH, l-dopa, rifampicin, scopolamine, MAOIs, TCAs, fentanyl derivative, phenytoin & valproic acid. Incompatible w/ alcohol.
