Pancreatin 150 mg (Lipase 10,000 u, amylase 8,000 u, protease 600 u)
Indications/Uses
Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency in paed & adults associated w/ cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic surgery & cancer, gastrectomy, GI bypass surgery (eg, Billroth II gastroenterostomy), ductal obstruction of pancreas or common bile duct (eg, from neoplasm), Shwachman-Diamond syndrome. Improvement of digestion & symptomatic relief of maldigestion after consumption of fatty meal eg, sensation of heaviness, bloating, abdominal distension & pain/cramping &/or diarrhoea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cystic fibrosis Adult & childn >4 yr Lipase 500 u/kg/meal, <4 yr Lipase 1,000 u/kg/meal. Max: Not to exceed lipase 10,000 u/kg daily. Conditions associated w/ pancreatic exocrine insufficiency Individualized dosage according to degree of maldigestion & fat content of meal. Required dose range: Lipase 25,000-80,000 u/kg/meal & ½ of individual dose for snacks. Improvement of digestion & symptomatic relief of maldigestion after consumption of fatty meal 1-2 cap/meal.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take during or immediately after meals. Swallow whole w/o crushing & chewing w/ enough fluid. For patients w/ difficulty swallowing, cap may be carefully opened & contents mixed w/ acidic soft food (eg, applesauce, yogurt, fruit juice) w/o chewing. Ensure adequate hydration.
Special Precautions
Assess unusual or changes in abdominal symptoms to exclude possibility of fibrosing colonopathy in patients taking lipase >10,000 u/kg daily. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain. Nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal distention, diarrhea.
