Amoxicillin Na 1,000 mg, K clavulanate 200 mg
Indications/Uses
Short-term treatment for upper & lower resp tract, skin & soft tissue, bone & joint & dental infections, septic abortion, puerperal & intra-abdominal sepsis, septicaemia, peritonitis & post-op infections. Prophylaxis against infections in major surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 1.2 g 8 hrly. More serious infections Increase to 6 hrly intervals. Childn 3 mth-12 yr 30 mg/kg 8 hrly. More serious infections Increase to 6 hrly intervals. Childn 0-3 mth 30 mg/kg 12 hrly increase to 8 hrly thereafter. Surgical prophylaxis Adult Usual dose: 1.2 g at anesth induction. High risk of infection 3-4 doses of 1.2 g in 24-hr period. Moderate renal impairment (CrCl 10-30 mL/min) 1.2 g IV followed by 600 mg IV 12 hrly. Severe renally impaired adult (CrCl <10 mL/min) 1.2 g IV followed by 600 mg IV 24 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillin. History of penicillin-associated cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction. Glandular fever, pharyngitis.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins & cephalosporins. Pseudomembranous colitis; Clostridium difficile colitis. Cholestatic jaundice. Diabetic patients. Monitor liver function at regular intervals. Avoid alcohol intake. Renal or hepatic impairment. Avoid use during 1st trimester of pregnancy. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea; nausea, vomiting, indigestion. Mucocutaneous candidiasis.
Drug Interactions
Increased & prolonged blood levels w/ probenecid. Increased allergic skin reactions w/ allopurinol. Lowered oestrogen reabsorption & reduced efficacy of combined OCs.
