Indications and Dosage
Ophthalmic
Eye infection, bacterial
Adult: As ophthalmic ointment: Apply directly into the conjunctival sac 1-3 times daily.
Child: Same as adult dose.

Topical/Cutaneous
Bacterial skin infections
Adult: For the prevention of infection in minor cuts, scrapes, or burns: As topical ointment/cream: Apply a small amount on the affected area 1-3 times daily for up to 7 days.
Child: Same as adult dose.
Incompatibility
Slowly inactivated in bases containing cholesterol, polyoxyethylene derivates, stearyl alcohol, and Na laurilsulfate. Rapidly inactivated in bases containing water, benzalkonium chloride, cetylpyridinium chloride, ichthammol, macrogols, phenol, propylene glycol, and tannic acid.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Patient with previous exposure to bacitracin; deep puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns (topical). Children. Pregnancy and lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Significant: Allergic reactions (e.g. rash), anaphylactic reactions (repeat exposure). Ophthalmic: Blurred vision, bacterial overgrowth (prolonged use).
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Rash, contact dermatitis.

Patient Counseling Information
The ophthalmic ointment may cause blurred vision, if affected, do not drive or operate machinery. Do not use topical ointment/cream over large areas of the body.
Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Bacitracin is a polypeptide antibiotic with bactericidal or bacteriostatic properties. Its antibacterial action depends on the concentration of the drug and the susceptibility of the organism. It prevents the transfer of mucopeptides into the cell wall, thereby inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Additionally, it is also active against protoplasts and disrupts bacterial plasma membrane.
Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption: Poorly absorbed from the mucous membranes, intact or denuded skin (topical).
Storage
Topical ointment/cream: Store between 15-30°C. Ophthalmic ointment: Store between 20-25°C.
