Cefuroxime axetil
Indications/Uses
Upper & lower resp tract, GUT, skin & soft tissue infections, gonorrhoea, acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis. Oral susp Early Lyme disease & subsequent prevention of late Lyme disease in adult & childn >12 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Most infections, mild to moderate lower resp tract infections eg, bronchitis, pyelonephritis 250 mg bd. More severe lower resp tract infections or suspected pneumonia 500 mg bd. UTI 125 mg bd. Pyelonephritis 250 mg bd. Uncomplicated gonorrhoea 1 g as single dose. Childn 125 mg bd. Max: 250 mg daily. Otitis media Childn >2 yr 250 mg bd or 15 mg/kg bd. Max: 500 mg daily, <2 yr 125 mg bd or 10 mg/kg bd. Max: 250 mg daily. Oral susp Lyme disease Adult & childn >12 yr 500 mg bd for 20 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Avoid prolonged use; patients concurrently treated w/ potent diuretics eg, frusemide. May cause pseudomembranous colitis. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances including diarrhoea, nausea & vomiting; pseudomembranous colitis; headache; eosinophilia, transient increases of hepatic enzymes.
Drug Interactions
Increased serum t½ w/ probenecid. Lowered bioavailabity & tend to cancel effects of postprandial absorption w/ drugs reducing gastric acidity.
