Chlorpheniramine maleate
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic treatment of perennial & seasonal allergic rhinitis, vasomator rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis. Symptomatic treatment of pruritus. In combination w/ pseudoephedrine for temporary relief of nasal & sinus congestion.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 4 mg 4-6 hrly. Max: 24 mg daily. Childn 6-12 yr 2 mg 4-6 hrly. Max: 12 mg daily; 2-5 yr 1 mg 4-6 hrly. Max: 6 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Concomitant therapy w/ MAOI. Childn <2 yr.
Special Precautions
Narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, prostatic hypertrophy, bladder neck obstruction, acute asthma, severe HTN, CV disease, bronchitis, bronchiectasis, thyrotoxicosis. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Hepatic disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn 2-6 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Sedation, nausea, epigastric pain, loss of appetite, increased sensitivity to sunlight, hypotension.
Drug Interactions
Enhanced sedative effects of alcohol, barbiturates, hypnotics, opioid analgesics, anxiolytics & neuroleptics. Enhanced antimuscarinic effects w/ MAOIs. Masked symptoms of ototoxicity w/ aminoglycosides, frusemide, erythromycin salicylates. Delayed hepatic metabolism w/ phenytoin.
