Atropine sulfate
Indications/Uses
Mydriasis & cycloplegia. Iris refraction or dilation desired in acute inflammatory iris & uveal tract conditions.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Uveitis Instill 1 drop tds. Refraction Instill 1 drop, repeated 1 hr prior to exam.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to atropine sulfate, belladonna alkaloids. Known or suspected angle-closure glaucoma. Childn <12 yr, w/ Down syndrome, spastic paralysis or brain damage.
Special Precautions
Increased risk of induced psychotic reactions & behavioural disturbances. Determine IOP & estimated anterior chamber depth of angle prior to therapy. Light sensitivity. May cause irritation due to benzalkonium Cl. Febrile patients exposed to elevated environmental temp. Avoid contact w/ container tip & soft contact lens. Remove contact lens prior to application & wait 15 min before reinsertion. Increased susceptibility to anticholinergic drugs. Allow 5-min interval if >1 topical ophth product is used. Excessive & prolonged use. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Hepatic & renal failure. Not recommended in women of childbearing potential & during pregnancy. Not to be used during lactation. Older childn, premature & low birth wt childn, w/ Down syndrome, spastic paralysis or brain damage; fair-skinned childn w/ blue eyes. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity; hallucination, confusional state, disorientation; dizziness, headache; eyelid oedema, photophobia, blurred vision, mydriasis; tachycardia, bradycardia; intestinal obstruction, abdominal distension, vomiting; erythema, rash; pyrexia.
Drug Interactions
Enhanced effects w/ other antimuscarinic drugs eg, amantadine, some antihistamines, phenothiazine antipsychotics, TCAs.
