Proxymetacaine HCl (proparacaine HCl)
Indications/Uses
Surface anaesth in ophth procedures eg, IOP tonometric measure, removal of foreign bodies & sutures, conjunctival & corneal scraping, gonioscopic exam & other cases where surface anaesth is indicated.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tonometry & other procedures of short duration Instill 1 or 2 drops prior to evaluation. Minor surgical procedures eg, foreign body or suture removal Instill 1-2 drops every 5-10 min for 1-3 doses. Prolonged anaesth as in cataract extraction Instill 1 or 2 drops every 5-10 min for 3-5 doses.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not for inj. Allergic contact dermatitis. Patients w/ cardiac disease or hyperthyroidism. May cause irritation due to benzalkonium Cl. Avoid accidental eye injuries. Protect eye from irritants, rubbing & foreign bodies. Not recommended to wear contact lens. Allow 5-min interval if >1 topical ophth product is used. Prolonged use. Avoid contact w/ container tip. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Hepatic or renal impairment. Not recommended during pregnancy. Lactation. Childn. Elderly >65 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity; syncope; corneal erosion & opacity, keratitis, blurred vision, photophobia, mydriasis, eye pain, irritation & swelling, ocular discomfort & hyperaemia, increased lacrimation.
