Metronidazole
Indications/Uses
Urethritis & vaginitis caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, amoebiasis (intestinal & hepatic amoebiasis); prevention of post-op anaerobic infections; giardiasis caused by Giardia lambia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Rate: 5 mL/min. Adult Treatment 500 mg IV infusion. Childn 7.5 mg/kg 8 hrly. Anaerobic infections Prevention: Adult 500 mg IV infusion followed by 500 mg oral administration. Childn 7.5 mg/kg 8 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other metronidazole derivatives. Blood dyscrasias; active CNS disease. 1st trimester of pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Alcohol consumption during therapy; convulsion; peripheral neuropathy or paresthesia; abnormal neurologic sign, psychosis; liver disorder, fungal (Candida) overgrowth in GIT or GUT. Prolonged use (>10 days) should be clinically monitored. Hepatic encephalopathy. 2nd & 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomfort, anorexia, coated (furred) tongue, dry mouth, unpleasant taste, headache, pruritus, skin rash. Rarely, vomiting, diarrhea, neurologic effects, urethral discomfort & darkening of urine; leukopenia; nausea, urticaria, angioedema, drowsiness, dizziness, ataxia, constipation, glossitis, stomatitis, vertigo, weakness, dryness of external genitalia, dysuria, cystitis, peripheral neuropathy.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol & metronidazole may provoke a disulfiram-like reaction. Metronidazole enhances the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Cimetidine prolongs the t½ of metronidazole. Other coumarin anticoagulants.
