Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to nitrofurans; impaired renal function; infants <3 mth; G6PD deficiency; porphyria; pregnancy.

Special Precautions
Elderly; preexisting pulmonary, hepatic, neurological dysfunction; conditions which may predispose to peripheral neuropathy (anaemia; DM; electrolyte imbalance; vit B and folate deficiency), lactation.

Adverse Reactions
GI effects; neurological effects; severe, sometimes irreversible peripheral polyneuropathy; hypersensitivity reactions; acute pulmonary sensitivity; subacute or chronic pulmonary symptoms; hepatotoxicity; blood disorders; brownish discolouration of urine.

Drug Interactions
Quinolone antibacterials may antagonise effects; antibacterial effects may be decreased by carbonic anhydrase inhibitors and drugs that alkalinise the urine. Probenecid or sulfinpyrazone may reduce excretion of nifurtoinol; magnesium trisilicate may reduce absorption. May reduce the effects of oral contraceptives.

Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Nifurtoinol has properties similar to nitrofurantoin. It is bactericidal to most gram positive and gram negative urinary tract pathogens. |
