Cefuroxime axetil
Indications/Uses
Treatment of pharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis media, sinusitis, acute bronchitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis; uncomplicated GUT, skin & soft tissue infections; acute uncomplicated gonorrhea, impetigo.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 250 mg bd. Lower resp tract infections 500 mg bd. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 1 g as a single dose. Childn 5-12 yr Serious infections or otitis media 15 mg/kg bd. Max: 500 mg.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Childn <5 yr.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins or other β-lactams. Prolonged use. Renal insufficiency, hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. Rarely, skin rashes, fever.
Drug Interactions
Diuretics (furosemide, bumetanide, ethacrynic acid), antitumor agents (carmustine, streptozocin), aminoglycosides, probenecid, antacids.
