Indications/Uses
Help lower cholesterol or other fats in the blood (eg, triglycerides); risk of heart attacks & strokes.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 10 mg once daily. Dose range: 5-20 mg once daily. Max: 40 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Liver disease. Patients taking cyclosporine after organ transplant. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ thyroid problems; regular alcohol intake is ≥3 daily; family history of muscular disorders after using an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor eg, atorvastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin or simvastatin; kidney or liver problems; diabetes; undergone surgery or other tissue injury; excessive physical exercise. Increase in HbA1c & fasting serum glucose levels. Perform liver function tests before & after initiation.
Adverse Reactions
Stomach pain, headache, constipation, dizziness, feeling sick.
Drug Interactions
Fibrates eg, gemfibrozil, fenofibrate, niacin or ezetimibe; warfarin; ritonavir combined w/ another protease inhibitor; antacids.
