Memantine HCl
Indications/Uses
Alzheimer's disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
20 mg/day as 2 divided doses. Initially, 5 mg/day for the 1st wk then increase to 10 mg on 2nd wk & to 15 mg on 3rd wk. From 4th wk & beyond, dose is adjusted to 20 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Heart disease, uncontrolled HTN, history of seizures or kidney disease. Patients w/ renal tubulary acidosis & UTI; intend to change diet. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, sleepiness, constipation, tiredness, confusion, hallucinations, vomiting, loss of appetite, dizziness, sleep disturbance, anxiety, high BP, change in urination frequency.
Drug Interactions
Cimetidine, ranitidine, procainamide, quinidine, quinine, hydrochlorothiazide, anticholinergics, levodopa & dopaminergic agonist, ketamine, dextromethorphan, anticoagulants.
