Omeprazole
Indications/Uses
Short-term treatment of duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, reflux oesophagitis. Treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer 20 mg once daily, may be increased to 40 mg once daily for severe or recurrent cases. Duration of therapy: 8 wk. Reflux oesophagitis 20 mg once daily for 4 wk. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome 60 mg once daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately before a meal.
Contraindications
Possibility of malignancy should be excluded before treatment when gastric ulcer is suspected. Treatment may alleviate symptoms & delay diagnosis.
Special Precautions
Treatment w/ acid-reducing drugs may lead to a slightly increased risk of GI infections eg, Salmonella & Campylobacter. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Skin rash, urticaria, pruritus, paraesthesia.
Drug Interactions
Ketoconazole, itraconazole, diazepam, phenytoin, warfarin, clarithromycin, digoxin.
