Indications/Uses
Management of pain severe enough to require daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment & for which alternative treatment options are inadequate eg, severe pain when other drugs provide no relief (eg, carcinoma & other malignant diseases, in burns, MI, neuritis & severe neuralgia, biliary & renal colics, vesical tenesmus, post-op & post-traumatic pain).
Dosage/Direction for Use
2.5 mg orally every 8-12 hr. Dosage must be carefully individualized according to patient response.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Pregnancy; neurosurgical interventions; shock; copious bleeding. Patients should be advised not to take methadone 4 hr prior to driving a car or during driving.
Special Precautions
Not indicated as an as-needed analgesic. Do not increase the dose above the recommended & administer only for a limited period (except in cases of malignant processes). Concomitant use w/ benzodiazepines or other CNS depressants, including alcohol, may result in profound sedation, resp depression, coma, & death. Limit dosages & durations to the min required. Observe patients for signs & symptoms of resp depression & sedation. Accidental consumption of even 1 dose, especially by childn, can result in a fatal overdose. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
