Metformin HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of type 2 DM in adults, especially in overwt patients, when dietary management & exercise alone does not result in adequate glycemic control. Monotherapy or in combination w/ other oral antidiabetic agents, or w/ insulin.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 1 tab bd or tds. Adjust dose after 10-15 days on the basis of blood glucose measurements. Max: 3 g/day.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic pre-coma. Renal failure or renal dysfunction. Dehydration, severe infection, shock, intravascular administration of iodinated contrast agents. Cardiac or resp failure, recent MI. Hepatic insufficiency, acute alcohol intoxication, alcoholism. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Lactic acidosis is rare & have occurred primarily in patient w/ significant renal failure. Serum creatinine levels should be determined prior to treatment & regularly thereafter. Discontinue during administration of iodinated contrast agent & surgery.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, metallic taste. Rarely, mild erythema & lactic acidosis.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol, iodinated contrast agent, glucocorticoids, β2-agonists, diuretics, ACE inhibitors.
