Indications/Uses
Treatment of folate-deficient megaloblastic anaemia. Prevention of anaemia in chronic haemolytic states or in kidney dialysis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & elderly Treatment of folate-deficient anaemia Initially 1 tab daily for 4 mth or until signs of RBC formation have been obtained. Max 3 tab in poor absorption cases. Maintenance: 1 tab every 1-7 days depending on the underlying disease. Prevention of anaemia in chronic haemolytic states or in kidney dialysis 1 tab daily or wkly, depending on the diet & rate of RBC breakup.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Untreated vit B12 deficiency (eg, in certain anaemias & lifelong vegetarians); pernicious anaemia; cancerous disease.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ coronary stent; epilepsy; folate-dependent tumour; intolerance to some sugars; patients undergoing haemodialysis due to kidney failure. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Rare: Stomach & intestinal problems. Allergic reaction.
Drug Interactions
Potential interaction w/ fluorouracil; antibiotics (eg, trimethoprim & sulphonamides); indigestion remedies (edible clay & antacids containing Al or Mg); Zn-containing prep eg, vit or food supplements; cholestyramine; sulfasalazine; triamterene; antiepileptics eg, phenytoin, phenobarb, primidone, Na valproate, carbamazepine, barbiturate; MTX; lithium; aspirin; alcohol; anaesth.
