Indications/Uses
Conditions where reduction of thyroid function is required eg, hyperthyroidism, prep for thyroidectomy in hyperthyroidism, prep for & as concomitant therapy w/ radio-iodine treatment.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initial dose: 15-40 mg daily in divided doses 8 hrly. Gradually reduce dose after improvement & control of symptoms is achieved. Maintenance: 5-15 mg daily. Childn Initial dose: 0.75 mg/kg daily in 3 divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue use & seek medical advice upon onset of mouth ulcers, sore throat, fever, skin rash or blood disorders. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, gastric distress, headache, arthralgia, skin rash & pruritus. Bone marrow depression that can lead to agranulocytosis.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ other antithyroid drugs &/or thyroxine can alter thyroid function measurements.
