Azithromycin dihydrate
Indications/Uses
Upper & lower resp tract infections, skin & soft tissue infections, STD, Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex (MAC) prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult STD caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, Haemophilus ducreyi or susceptible Neisseria gonorrhoeae 1,000 mg as a single dose. MAC prophylaxis in HIV patients 1,200 mg once wkly. Other indications 500 mg daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 then 250 mg daily on days 2-5. Childn >45 kg Single daily dose of 10 mg/kg for 3 days, or 10 mg/kg on day 1 then 5 mg/kg daily on days 2-5.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin or any of the macrolides.
Special Precautions
Patient w/ CrCl <40 mL/min, hepatic disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Avoid co-administration w/ ergot derivatives.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, vertigo, convulsion, headache, somnolence, paresthesia, hyperactivity, GI disturbances, interstitial nephritis, acute renal failure, liver abnormalities, arthralgia, aggressive reaction, nervousness, agitation, anxiety, vaginitis, skin allergic reactions.
