Inactivated, adsorbed, hepatitis A (GBM strain) vaccine
Indications/Uses
Avaxim 80 Prevention of infection caused by HAV in childn 12 mth-15 yr. Avaxim 160 Prevention of infection caused by HAV in adults & adolescents ≥16 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM Avaxim 80 0.5 mL primary vaccination dose, followed by a 0.5 mL booster dose 6 mth to 10 yr after the 1st dose. Can be used as a booster in subjects who have received 1st vaccination w/ another inactivated hepatitis A vaccine. Avaxim 160 0.5 mL primary dose, followed by a booster dose 6-12 mth after 1st dose, & can be administered up to 36 mth after 1st dose. Can also be administered as a booster dose of hepatitis A vaccine after receiving combined typhoid fever & hepatitis A vaccine 6-36 mth earlier.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine, or to neomycin, or following previous Avaxim inj. Postpone vaccination in the event of febrile illness.
Special Precautions
Do not administer intravascularly, intradermally, & into the buttocks. Patients on immunosuppressants (eg, corticosteroids, cytotoxic drugs, RT) or in a state of immune deficiency (eg, HIV infection). Patients w/ liver disease; haemophilia or those easily subjected to bruises or bleeding. May not work properly in patients w/ HAV infection at the time of vaccination. Contains phenylalanine. Not to be used during pregnancy except in case of major contamination risk.
Adverse Reactions
Avaxim 80 Inj site pain, abnormal crying. Reduced appetite; irritability, insomnia; headache; stomach aches, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting; muscle and joint pain, local reactions at the inj site eg, redness, swelling or induration, bruising; malaise, fever, fatigue or drowsiness. Avaxim 160 Mild inj site pain; fatigue. Headache; nausea, vomiting; loss of appetite; diarrhoea, abdominal pain; muscle & joint pain; mild fever.
Drug Interactions
Immunological response may be diminished in case of immunosuppressive treatment (eg, corticosteroids, cytotoxic drugs, RT). Not to be mixed in the same syringe w/ other vaccines.
