Tab: URTI eg, sinusitis, otitis media. Lower resp tract infections eg, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia. UTI. Skin & soft tissue infections. Dental infections. Powd for oral susp: Abscess, cellulites, impetigo caused by susceptible penicillinase-producing & non-penicillinase-producing Staph aureus & S. epidermidis, Strep pyogenes (group A β-hemolytic streptococci) or Corynebacterium. Otitis media or upper & lower resp tract infections eg, bronchopneumonia, sinusitis, & acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis caused by susceptible H. influenzae. Chancroid. Infections caused by β-lactamase-producing M. catarrhalis. Uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by penicillinase-producing strains of N. gonorrhoeae or non-penicillinase-producing strains of the organism. Uncomplicated or complicated UTI caused by susceptible organisms including E. coli, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, or P. mirabilis. Anaerobic & mixed aeorobic-anaerobic bacterial infections including intra-abdominal & gynecologic infections eg, endometritis, salpingitis, pelvic cellulitis, & acute pelvic inflammatory disease.

Tab Adult & childn >12 yr Mild-moderate infection One 375-mg tab tds. Severe infection One 1,000-mg tab bd. Childn <40 kg 20-40 mg/kg (based on amoxicillin component) daily in divided dose tds. Powd for oral susp Adult & childn ≥40 kg 250-500 mg every 8 hr or 875 mg every 12 hr. Childn ≥3 mth & <40 kg 20-90 mg/kg/day divided every 8-12 hr. Infant <3 mth 30 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hr using 125 mg/5 mL of amoxicillin.

May be taken with or without food.

Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid & penicillin group of antibiotics. History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction w/ amoxicillin/clavulanate K therapy.

Hypersensitivity reactions. Risk of fungal or bacterial superinfection w/ prolonged use. Higher incidence of diarrhea. Patients w/ infectious mononucleosis; history of allergic reactions; severe liver or renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.

Tab: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, anorexia, flatulence, dyspepsia; skin reactions; cholestatic jaundice, hepatitis, interstitial nephritis; leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia. Powd for oral susp: Diaper rash, skin rash, urticaria; abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, loose stools, nausea, vomiting; vaginitis, vag mycosis; moniliasis. Increased alkaline phosphatase, cholestatic jaundice, flatulence, headache, hepatic dysfunction, hepatitis, increased LFTs, increased prothrombin time, thrombocytosis, vasculitis (hypersensitivity).

Reduced efficacy of OCs. Amoxicillin: Increased levels w/ probenecid. Increased effect of anticoagulants. Increased incidence of rash in patients w/ hyperuricemia concomitantly receiving allopurinol.
