Memantine HCl
Indications/Uses
Dementia in patients w/ moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & elderly 20 mg. Starting dose: 1st wk: ½ tab (5 mg), 2nd wk: 1 tab (10 mg), 3rd wk: 1½ tab, 4th wk & beyond: 2 tab (20 mg). Doses are to be taken once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
History of epileptic seizures, recent MI, CHF, uncontrolled HTN. Concomitant use w/ amantadine, ketamine, dextromethorphan & other N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonists. Patients who have recently diagnosed or intend to change their diet substantially; suffering from states of renal tubulary acidosis; severe infections of the urinary tract. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescents <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, sleepiness, constipation, dizziness, shortness of breath, high BP, hypersensitivity.
Drug Interactions
May change amantadine, ketamine, dextromethorphan, dantrolene, baclofen, cimetidine, ranitidine, procainamide, quinidine, quinine, nicotine, hydrochlorothiazide (or any combination w/ hydrochlorothiazide), anticholinergics, anticonvulsants, barbiturates, dopaminergic agonists (eg, L-dopa, bromocriptine), neuroleptics, oral anticoagulants.
