Levocetirizine HCl
Indications/Uses
Relief of nasal & ocular symptoms of seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis. Relief of symptoms of chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥12 yr 2 tsp (10 mL). Childn 6-11 yr 1 tsp (5 mL); 6 mth to 5 yr 1.25 mg (2.5 mL). All doses are taken once daily in the evening. Renal impairment CrCl ≥80 mL/min 5 mg once daily; 50-79 mL/min 5 mg once daily; 30-49 mL/min 5 mg once every 2 days; <30 mL/min 5 mg once every 3 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take in the evening.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to levocetirizine or other piperazine derivatives. Galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Severe renal impairment (CrCl <10 mL/min). Childn 6 mth-11 yr w/ renal impairment.
Special Precautions
Epileptic patients & patients at risk of convulsions. Avoid concurrent use w/ alcohol or other CNS depressants. Patients w/ predisposing factors of urinary retention (eg, spinal cord lesion, prostatic hyperplasia); discontinue if urinary retention occurs. May impair ability to drive or operate machines. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in infant & toddlers <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, somnolence, mouth dryness, fatigue, hypersensitivity including anaphylaxis, aggression, agitation, convulsion, visual disturbances, palpitation, dyspnoea, nausea, hepatitis, angioneurotic oedema, fixed drug eruption, pruritus, rash & urticaria.
Drug Interactions
Decreased clearance w/ theophylline. May have CNS effects w/ alcohol or other CNS depressants.
