Indications/Uses
DM in adults, adolescents & childn from age of 6 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC Individualized dose. Once a day preferably at the same time every day. May inj up to 3 hr before or after the usual time of administration.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Hypoglycemia &/or hyperglycemia. Patients w/ illness or major injury. Kidney or liver problems. Concomitant use w/ pioglitazone. Switching from another type, brand or manufacturer of insulin. May affect ability to drive & use tools or machine. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 yr. Elderly ≥65 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycaemia. Skin & allergic reactions at inj site; reddening, pain, itching, hives, swelling or inflammation at the inj site reaction. Lipoatrophy or lipohypertrophy when inj too often at the same place. Temporary visual impairment, Na retention, edema, retinopathy. Insulin administration may cause insulin antibodies to form.
Drug Interactions
Hypoglycemia w/ other antidiabetics, disopyramide, fluoxetine, sulfonamide antibiotics, fibrates, MAOIs, ACE inhibitors; medicines to relieve pain & lower fever eg, pentoxifylline, propoxyphene & salicylates (eg, acetylsalicylic acid); pentamidine. Hyperglycemia w/ corticosteroids (eg, cortisone), danazol, diazoxide, PIs, diuretics, glucagon, INH, somatropin, thyroid hormones; oestrogens & progestogens; clozapine, olanzapine & phenothiazine derivatives; sympathomimetics eg, epinephrine (adrenaline), salbutamol & terbutaline. Blood sugar level may rise or fall w/ β-blockers (eg, clonidine, guanethidine, reserpine) or clonidine; lithium salts; alcohol. Development of heart failure w/ pioglitazone.
