Xylometazoline nasal spray or drops helps relieve nasal congestion due to allergies or common cold.
Use Xylometazoline exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as a solution in nasal drop or in nasal spray.
To use the nasal drops, follow these steps:
- Blow your nose gently before using the drops.
- Shake the bottle well.
- Tilt your head back and instill the recommended dose into the affected nose. Keep your head tilted for a few minutes to allow the medicine to spread throughout the nose.
To use the nasal spray, follow these steps:
- Remove the cover and press the pump a few times until a full and even spray is produced.
- With your head on an upright position, place nozzle into your nostril and ensure firm fit.
- Administer the recommended dose into your nostril by pressing the pump.
- Wipe and cap the nasal spray.
Make sure you know how to use your nasal drops or spray. If you have problems or do not understand the instructions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Do not use this medicine beyond the recommended days of administration. Your doctor will advise you of the treatment timeframe.
Do not share your nasal spray or drops with others as it could spread infection.
Administer the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- inflammation or lesions of the skin around the nostril
- surgery in the nose
- glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
as Xylometazoline may not be suitable for you.
Do not give this medicine to children below 6 years old unless instructed to do so by the doctor.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- difficulty in urinating due to enlarged prostate gland
- thyroid disease
- heart disease
- high blood pressure
- diabetes
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Xylometazoline may cause any of the following side effects: headache, nausea, dryness, discomfort or irritation of the nose and throat.
If you use this medicine for too long or more often than instructed, it may cause rebound congestion (swelling of the nasal passages).
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking medicines for depression known as monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine and tranylcypromine or a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) such as amitriptyline, nortriptyline, desipramine, imipramine and doxepin.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Nasal drop should be protected from heat.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
