Special Precautions

Increased intake over prolonged period. May give false -ve results in methods utilising glucose oxidase (eg, Labstix, Tes-Tape) & faecal occult blood tests (high doses); false +ve results in neocuproine methods. May affect estimation of uric acid by phosphotungstate or uricase w/ Cu reduction & measurement of creatinine in non-deproteinised serum. Not to be taken by patients w/ rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, total lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Pregnancy & lactation.

Adverse Reactions

Headache; flushing; nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhoea (large doses); redness of skin; increased urinary oxalate excretion (>1 g daily dose in patients at risk of hyperoxaluria); haemolytic anaemia (in G6PD individuals); diuresis (>600 mg daily dose).

Drug Interactions

Increased renal excretion of amphetamine. Decreased plasma ascorbate conc w/ smoking & OCs. Increased absorption of Fe. Aspirin may interfere w/ absorption of ascorbic acid. May increase urinary Al elimination of Al-containing antacids. Cyanide toxicity w/ amygdalin. Enhanced urinary Fe excretion w/ desferrioxamine. May interfere w/ biochemical determinations of creatinine, uric acid & glucose in blood & urine samples.
