Why do I need this medicine?
Trientine is used to treat Wilson’s disease (a rare inherited condition in which the body cannot transport or remove copper in the normal way resulting in copper build up in the body). It is given to individuals who cannot tolerate other medicine.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Trientine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take it on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Trientine is available as a tablet or capsule.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your condition.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • previous problems in the nerves or nervous system
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Trientine to a child or an elderly. Children and elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.

Do not switch brands or dosage forms unless instructed by your doctor. This is because different brands or dosage forms of this medicine may contain different amounts of Trientine.

Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
  • Routine tests (e.g. liver function, blood tests, urinalysis) may be done while you are being treated with this medicine.
  • Regular monitoring of fever and changes in the nervous system and skin may also be needed.
Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
What side effects could I experience?
Trientine may cause any of the following side effects: nausea, muscle spasm, stomach upset and discomfort, and itching.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help, although they are not common. Inform your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • rash on the cheeks or other body parts, sun or light sensitivity
  • chest pain or shortness of breath
  • trouble controlling body movements
  • extreme tiredness, pale skin
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
If you are taking any other medicines, your doctor may advise you to take Trientine at least 1 hour apart from other medicines.

Your doctor may give you iron supplements while taking Trientine. Take the supplement 2 hours before or after taking this medicine.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store the tablets in a cool, dry place.

Store the capsules in the refrigerator, between 2-8°C. Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used.

Keep this medicine away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
