Tigecycline is an antibiotic. It is used to treat infections in the lungs, skin and abdomen (belly).
Tigecycline is to be given intravenously (into the vein) over a period of 30 to 60 minutes.
Your doctor or nurse will administer this medicine for you.
This medicine must be given at a regular interval for it to be effective. Try to be on time during your scheduled appointments.
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any dose. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Tigecycline.
If you miss an appointment miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment should be given as soon as possible.
Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction (breathlessness, rashes, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any similar antibiotics such as doxycycline, minocycline, oxytetracycline and tetracycline.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- infections within the abdomen
- diabetic foot infection
- liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly. Your doctor may need to do routine liver function tests while you are being treated with this medicine.
Tigecycline may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects may include any of the following: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache and injection site skin reactions such as rashes, pain and swelling.
Tigecycline may cause your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct and prolonged exposure to the sun and other forms of ultraviolet (UV) light like tanning beds or sun lamps.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- impaired (poor/slow) wound healing
- chills, patches of discoloured skin, fast heartbeat, extreme weakness, breathing problem
- rashes with skin peeling or blisters / rashes with peeling of the skin or blistering of the lips, mouth or eyes accompanied by fever
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking medicines for blood clots e.g. warfarin.
Inform your doctor if you are currently taking birth control pills as this can reduce the effectiveness of Tigecycline. You should not stop or start any birth control pills without first informing your doctor. Ask your doctor about using non-hormonal birth control as an alternative while being treated with this medicine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Prior reconstitution, store Tigecycline in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Reconstituted solution maybe be refrigerated (2 to 8 degree Celsius) for up to 48 hours or be stored at room temperature for up to 6 to 24 hours.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
