Why do I need this medicine?
Tenoxicam helps relieve pain and inflammation. It is used to provide relief in pain associated with musculoskeletal and joint disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis (inflammation in joints of fingers, wrist, feet, ankles), osteoarthritis (damage of joints’ surfaces), and ankylosing spondylitis (inflammation in joints of your spine).

Tenoxicam may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Tenoxicam exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take this medicine with food or immediately after a meal. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Try to take it at the same time each day.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take Tenoxicam if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to similar medicines such as naproxen, ibuprofen, diclofenac, aspirin.

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • current or history of stomach ulcers, bleeding, or perforation
  • severe heart failure
  • severe kidney disease
  • severe liver disease
  • aspirin-asthma
as Tenoxicam may not be suitable for you.

Do not take Tenoxicam if you are on your third trimester of pregnancy.

This medicine should not be used to treat pain before and after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (procedure to improve and restore the blood flow in the heart).
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • heart disease, including risk factors e.g. high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, smoking
  • oedema (swelling of the ankles, feet or hand)
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • bleeding disorder
  • lupus or systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE] (autoimmune disease that causes inflammation)
  • stomach disease e.g. ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Tenoxicam to an elderly person. Elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.

If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Tenoxicam.
What side effects could I experience?
Tenoxicam may cause drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness, or blurred vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or need to see clearly.

Other side effects include any of the following: headache, ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion, dry mouth, stomach wind, loss of appetite, rash, swelling of the ankles, feet or hand.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and throat
  • pass out blood, black, tarry stools or vomit coffee-ground-like vomitus
  • rashes with skin peeling or blistering of the lips, mouth or eyes accompanied by fever
  • chest pain
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • blood-thinning medicine e.g. warfarin, clopidogrel
  • certain antibiotics e.g. ciprofloxacin
  • medicines for high blood pressure e.g. hydrochlorothiazide, enalapril
  • diuretics or “water pills’ e.g. furosemide, spirinolactone
  • medicine for heart disease e.g. digoxin
  • anti-inflammatory medicines e.g. hydrocortisone, prednisone
  • medicine for mood disorder e.g. lithium
  • medicine to treat rheumatoid arthritis e.g. methotrexate
  • medicines used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. ciclosporin, tacrolimus
  • medicines for HIV infection e.g. zidovudine
  • cholesterol-lowering medicines e.g. cholestyramine
  • medicine to treat cough e.g. dextromethorphan
  • medicine for gout e.g. probenecid
  • other medicines for pain and inflammation e.g. aspirin, ibuprofen
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Tenoxicam.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from moisture.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
