Torasemide
Indications/Uses
Essential HTN; oedema due to CHF, kidney or liver disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult HTN Initially 5 mg once daily, may be increased to 10 mg once daily, or combine w/ additional antihypertensive agent. Oedema associated w/ CHF, renal or hepatic disease Initially 5-20 mg once daily, may be increased to approx double the dose.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take sufficient quantity of liqd. Swallow whole, do not crush/chew.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to torasemide, or other sulphonylureas. Anuria.
Special Precautions
Serious hepatic disease; coma state may be precipitated; low blood Na or K levels, low blood vol; heart diseases, increased risk of cardiac arrhythmias in concurrent treatment w/ cardiac glycosides; gout or diabetes; renal failure or urinary problems; hypotension. Contains lactose; patients w/ lactose intolerance. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery if taken w/ alcohol. Not recommended in childn. Not recommended during pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, headache, drowsiness; diarrhoea; increased urinary frequency, urine vol, night time urine productions.
Drug Interactions
Increased effect of cardiac glycosides, eg, digoxin. Increased ear toxicity w/ aminoglycosides & ethacrynic acid. Increased toxicity of lithium & salicylates. Decreased effect w/ NSAIDs (eg, ibuprofen, indomethacin), probenecid & cholestyramine.
