Indications and Dosage
Intra-articular
Osteoarthritis of the knee Adult: 20-25 mg once weekly for 5 weeks or up to 30 mg once weekly for 3-4 weeks. Not to repeat treatment course within 6 months for any individual joint. Ophthalmic Surgical aid in the anterior segment during cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation Adult: Apply a sufficient quantity into the eye, as required. Topical/Cutaneous Skin ulcer, Skin wound Adult: As cream or gel: Apply a thin layer onto clean and disinfected wound/ulcer bid or tid.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to sodium hyaluronate or avian proteins.

Special Precautions
Monitor intraocular pressure. Pregnancy.

Adverse Reactions
Ophthalmic: Transient rise in intraocular pressure. Intra-articular inj: Pain and inflammation at inj site. Hypersensitivity; anaphylaxis; hypotensive crisis.

Action
Description: Sodium hyaluronate is a polysaccharide which functions as a tissue lubricant. It is widely used in ophthalmic surgery because it forms a viscoelastic solution in water which makes it a suitable substitute for aqueous and vitreous humour.
Pharmacokinetics: Distribution: Widely distributed in body tissues and intracellular fluids. Excretion: Ophthalmic, via Canal of Schlemm. |
