Ranolazine is used together with other medicines to treat chronic angina (long-term chest pain which occurs when the heart does not receive enough blood and oxygen).
Take Ranolazine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Ranolazine is available as an extended-release tablet. Swallow it whole. Do not crush, break, or chew the tablet.
If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- moderate or severe liver disease
- severe kidney disease
as Ranolazine may not be suitable for you.
This medicine is not indicated for sudden episode of chest pain.
Do not take Ranolzaine with certain antibiotics, medicines to treat fungal or HIV infection, depression, heart rhythm disorders, epilepsy (fits or seizures), TB (infection known as tuberculosis), or certain herbal supplements. Please see the section “Can I take this with other medicines?” below for more information.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- heart disease e.g. heart rhythm disorder, heart failure
- mild liver disease
- mild to moderate kidney disease
- low body weight (60 kg or less)
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- Routine tests (e.g. ECG, renal function) may be needed. Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need these tests.
- You may need to regularly monitor your blood pressure while being treated with this medicine.
Ranolazine may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects may include any of the following: headache, constipation, nausea, vomiting, weakness.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Ranolazine with the following medicines:
- certain antibiotics e.g. clarithromycin, telithromycin
- medicines for fungal infection e.g. itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. ritonavir, saquinavir
- medicine to treat depression e.g. nefazodone
- medicine for heart rhythm disorders e.g. quinidine, dofetilide, sotalol
- medicines to treat epilepsy e.g. phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital
- medicines to treat TB (infection known as tuberculosis) e.g. rifampicin
- herbal supplement e.g. St. John’s wort
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- antibiotic e.g. erythromycin
- medicine for fungal infection e.g. fluconazole
- medicines for heart disorder e.g. digoxin, metoprolol, diltiazem, verapamil
- medicines for allergy e.g. terfenadine, astemizole, misolastine
- medicines to treat depression e.g. imipramine, doxepin, amitriptyline
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. efavirenz
- cholesterol-lowering medicines e.g. lovastatin, simvastatin
- medicines used in organ transplant or certain immune disorder e.g. ciclosporin, tacrolimus
- medicine for cancer e.g. cyclophosphamide
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Ranolazine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol and grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
