Indications/Uses
Serious cerebral injuries of vascular traumatic nature w/ or w/o loss of consciousness. Degenerative damages & chronic cerebral vascular injuries in senile dementia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab 2 tab daily. Granules 500-1,000 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food. May be taken w/ food to avoid GI upset. Granules for oral soln: Dissolve in ½ glass water.
Contraindications
Patients w/ hypertonia of the parasympathetic nervous system. Conditions like unconsciousness, brain surgery.
Special Precautions
Do not administer in conjunction w/ medications containing centrophenoxine. Do not exceed 1,000 mg daily in case of persistent intracranial hemorrhage. High intake may cause low BP, steatorrhea, nausea, vomiting, salivation, diarrhea, constipation, anorexia, dizziness, sweating, insomnia & headache. May trigger existing epilepsy. Upper limit doses are contraindicated in patients suffering from trimethylaminuria, Parkinson's disease, or kidney or liver disease. Skin rash, cold & cough, agitation, paranoia & severe depression have been reported. Patients w/ history of depression. May produce side effects similar to succinylcholine eg, resp depression; fishy odor. Sweating & stunted growth may occur. Patients w/ kidney or liver disorders. Pregnancy & lactation.
Drug Interactions
Decreased urinary excretion of carnitine in young adult women. Enhanced effect in the brain w/ chronic treatment w/ lithium. May increase dopa plasma conc. Diminished metabolites w/ methotrexate. Possible interaction w/ pentazocine. May intensify effects &/or toxicity w/ succinylcholine.
