Indications/Uses

Induction & maintenance of general anaesth, sedation of ventilated patients receiving intensive care.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Individualized dosage. Induction of general anaesth Adult 1.5-2.5 mg/kg. Childn >3 yr 2.5 mg/kg, adjusted based on age & wt. Maintenance of general anaesth Adult & elderly Continuous infusion 4-12 mg/kg/hr. Repeat bolus inj 25-50 mg. Childn >3 yr 9-15 mg/kg/hr. Sedation during intensive care Adult & elderly Continuous infusion 0.3-4 mg/kg/hr.

Special Precautions

Patients of ASA grades 3 & 4, debilitated patients; circulatory or resp impairment, hypovolaemic patients; renal or hepatic impairment; epileptics or epileptic history; drug dependency history; drug hypersensitivity history; disorders of fat metabolism (primary leucosis, diabetic hyperlipidemia, pancreatitis). Avoid alcohol at least 8 hr before/after administration. Concomitant use w/ agents that cause bradycardia. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Elderly.

Adverse Reactions

CV effects eg bradycardia, hypotension, HTN, premature atrial or ventricular contractions, syncope, arrhythmia. CNS effects eg confusion, delirium, vertigo, euphoria. GI effects eg hypersalivation, abnormal cramping, diarrhoea, xerostomia, nausea, vomiting. Resp, skin, musculoskeletal, urogenital, haematological effects. Inj site reactions.
