Phenazopyridine is used to help relieve urinary tract pain, burning sensation or discomfort and urgent and frequent urination that may be caused by infection, trauma, surgery, or certain examination procedures.
This medicine is not an antibiotic. It will not cure a bladder infection.
Take Phenazopyridine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take it together with food or immediately after a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- kidney disease
- severe inflammation of the liver
as Phenazopyridine may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have G6PD deficiency (an inherited blood disorder that affects the red blood cell).
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are going to undergo certain laboratory tests (e.g. urine tests for ketones or sugar), inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine.
Phenazopyridine may stain fabric or clothing, and contact lenses. Ensure to protect your clothing or fabrics from staining and avoid wearing contact lenses while you are taking this medicine.
Phenazopyridine may cause any of the following side effects: headache, dizziness, stomach cramps or discomfort, and skin rash or itching.
This medicine may cause discolouration of the urine. Your urine may look reddish-orange in colour. This is normal while you are being treated with Phenazopyridine.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- unable to pass urine or any changes in your urine output
- yellowing of the skin or eyes, tiredness, swelling in the legs and ankles
- shortness of breath, bluish or grey discolouration of your lips, nails or skin
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
