Griseofulvin
Indications/Uses
Mycotic diseases of the skin, hair & nails due to microsporum, trichophyton or epidermophyton.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Divide daily doses w/ 6-hr interval. Duration: 2-6 mth for skin & hair infections; 6-9 mth for fingernails; at least 1 yr for toenails. Adult 500 mg-1 g 24 hrly. Severe or extensive infections 1.5-2 g 24 hrly for short periods. Childn 10 mg/kg 24 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Porphyria; may precipitate an acute attack. Liver failure. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Men should not father childn w/in 6 mth of treatment. Alcohol intake. May precipitate or aggravate SLE. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, skin rashes, dry mouth, altered sensation of taste, GI disturbances.
Drug Interactions
Decreased GI absorption w/ phenobarbitone. May increase rate of metabolism & diminish side effects of coumarin anticoagulants & OCs. Reduced plasma conc of salicylates. May enhance effects of alcohol.
