Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis, glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. Paget's disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Postmenopausal osteoporosis 5 mg once daily or 35 mg wkly. Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis 5 mg once daily. Paget's disease 30 mg once daily for 2 mth. Consider re-treatment after 2 mth if relapse occurs or if serum alkaline phosphatase fails to normalize.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take before breakfast at least 30 min before the 1st food/drink/med of the day. Take w/ a full glass (≥120 mL) of plain water while in an upright position. Do not lie down for at least 30 min after taking. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush/suck.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hypocalcemia. Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 min.
Special Precautions
May cause upper GI disorders eg, dysphagia, oesophagitis, oesophageal & gastric ulcer. Not recommended in patients w/ severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Back pain, abdominal pain, neck pain, asthenia, chest pain, neoplasm, hernia; HTN, cardiovascular disorder, angina pectoris; nausea, diarrhea, flatulence, gastritis, GI disorders, rectal disorders, tooth disorders; ecchymosis, anemia; arthralgia, joint disorders, myalgia, bone pain, bone disorders, leg cramps, bursitis, tendon disorders; depression, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, neuralgia, vertigo, hypertonia, paresthesia; pharyngitis, rhinitis, dyspnea, pneumonia; rash, pruritus, skin carcinoma; cataract, conjunctivitis, otitis media; UTI, cystitis; asymptomatic mild decreases in serum Ca & P levels.
Drug Interactions
Absorption is interfered by Ca, antacids or oral medications containing divalent cations. May interfere w/ bone-imaging agents.
