Ornidazole
Indications/Uses
Trichomoniasis (trichomonas vulvovaginitis, urethritis, bartholinitis, cervicitis, prostatitis, adnexitis); amoebiasis (amoebic dysentery, extraintestinal amoebiasis including hepatic amoebiasis); giardiasis. Infection prevention after surgical & gynaecological interventions.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Trichomoniasis 500 mg bd (morning & evening) for 5 days or 1.5 g once in the evening. Intestinal amoebiasis 1.5 g once daily. >60 kg body wt 2 g/day (2 tab in the morning & 2 tab in the evening). Course of treatment: 3 days. Extraintestinal amoebiasis 0.5 g in the morning & evening for 5-10 days. Giardiasis 1.5 g/day. Course of treatment: 1-2 days. Prevention of infection caused by anaerobic bacteria 0.5 g-1 g before surgery, 1 tab bd for 3-5 days after surgery.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. CNS diseases (epilepsy, brain lesion, multiple sclerosis). Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Special Precautions
In trichomoniasis, treat both partners to avoid reinfection. Patients w/ CNS diseases (organic diseases & predisposition to seizures) & diseases of the hematopoietic system. May affect ability to drive or operate machines. Severe renal insufficiency. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Polyuria; somnolence, headache, dizziness, fatigue, temporary loss of consciousness, CNS disturbances (ataxia, dysarthria, tremor, seizures) & peripheral nerves (burning sensation, sleeping limbs, paresthesia); inhibition of leucopoiesis; abnormal liver function, allergic reactions.
Drug Interactions
Potentiates the effect of coumarin-type oral anticoagulants. Prolongs muscle relaxant effect of vecuronium Br. Potential peripheral neuropathy, depression, epileptiform seizures w/ other 5-nitroimidazole derivatives. Decreased serum half-life w/ barbiturate, benzodiazepines, rifampicin. Increased half-life w/ cimetidine, macrolides. Not recommended w/ neurotoxic & hematoxic drugs.
