Indications/Uses

Treatment & prevention of vit E deficiency (inadequate dietary intake, childn w/ cystic fibrosis or biliary atresia malabsorption of fat, or abetalipoproteinaemia, premature very low birth wt infants).

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult 1 soft cap daily. Childn w/ cystic fibrosis 100-200 mg of dl-α-tocopheryl acetate or about 67-135 mg of d-α-tocopherol, w/ abetalipoproteinaemia 50-100 mg/kg of dl-α-tocepheryl acetate or about 33-67 mg/kg of d-α-tocopherol.

Adverse Reactions

Large doses: Diarrhea, abdominal pain, other GI disturbances, fatigue & weakness.

Drug Interactions

May increase effects of anticoagulants & warfarin. May potentiate action to inhibit platelet aggregation of aspirin. Increased absorption, intake & storage of vit A. Dosages >10 IU/kg may slow response to Fe treatment in childn or may result in hemolytic anemia w/ Fe supplements in childn. May protect against action of vit K. Risk of hemorrhage w/ oral anticoagulants. Absorption may be decreased w/ excessive use of mineral oil.
