Pharmacotherapeutic Group: Mucolytics.
Acetylcysteine is a mucomodifier of the mucolytic type and facilitates evacuation of respiratory mucus. It acts on the gel phase of the mucus by cutting disulfur bridges of glycoproteins.
The molecule contains thiol (-SH) group which breaks the disulfide chair (-SS-) of glycoprotein peptide in sputum. It, then, reduce the sputum viscosity which promote mucus discharge.
