Mometasone furoate
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic treatment & prophylaxis of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Treatment of perennial allergic rhinitis in adults & ped patients ≥2 yr. Nasal polyps in patients ≥18 yr. Adjunctive treatment to antibiotic in patients ≥12 yr w/ acute sinusitis episode.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Allergic rhinitis Adult (including geriatric patient) & childn ≥12 yr 2 sprays in each nostril once daily, dose may be reduced to 1 spray in each nostril once symptom is controlled. May be increased to max: 4 sprays in each nostril once daily, 2-11 yr 1 spray in each nostril once daily. Nasal polyp 2 sprays in each nostril once daily, may be increased to max: 2 sprays in each nostril bd if symptoms are inadequately controlled after 5-6 wk. Acute sinusitis episode 2 sprays in each nostril bd.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Not to be used in presence of untreated localised infection involving nasal mucosa & recent nasal surgery or trauma.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if localized nose or pharynx fungal infection develops. Active or quiescent tuberculous resp tract infection or untreated fungal, bacterial, systemic viral infections or ocular herpes simplex. Immunosuppressed patients. W/drawal symptoms during transfer from systemic corticosteroids. Long-term use. Not to be used during pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; viral infection; pharyngitis; epistaxis/blood-tinged mucus; coughing; pharyngitis, upper resp tract infection; dysmenorrhea; musculoskeletal pain; sinusitis; vomit.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc w/ ketoconazole.
