Metformin HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of type 2 diabetes, alone or w/ oral antidiabetic agents or w/ insulin, when hyperglycemia cannot be controlled by diet management or if patient is overwt. 
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 tab bd, may be increased by 1 tab at wkly intervals. Max: 6 tab daily. Maintenance: 1 tab bd-tds.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Diabetic coma & ketoacidosis; active or history of lactic acidosis; severe hepatic disease; renal disease; conditions associated w/ hypoxemia.
Special Precautions
Monitor blood glucose level regularly for the possibility of hypoglycemia. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Anorexia, dyspepsia, flatulence, metallic taste, nausea, vomiting, headache, wt loss.
Drug Interactions
May decrease absorption of folic acid & vit B12. Caution w/ alcohol, cimetidine, furosemide.
