Alendronate Na trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis; glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis & Paget's bone disease in men & women; to increase bone mass in men w/ osteoporosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at least 30 min before the 1st food/drink/medication of the day w/ a full glass of plain water & remain in sitting/upright position for at least 30 min. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ abnormalities of the oesophagus & other factors which delay oesophageal emptying eg stricture or achalasia; inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 min; hypocalcemia. Childn. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ active upper GI problems eg dysphagia, oesophageal disease, gastritis, duodenitis, ulcers or major GI disease. Discontinue treatment if symptoms of oesophageal irritation develop. Avoid invasive dental procedures during treatment. Correct hypocalcemia & other disorders affecting mineral metabolism prior to treatment & monitor these conditions during therapy. Renal impairment (GFR<35 mL/min). Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, oesophageal ulcer, dysphagia, abdominal distention, acid regurgitation; musculoskeletal (bone, muscle or joint) pain.
Drug Interactions
Ca supplements, antacids & other oral medicinal products may interfere w/ absorption of alendronate.
