Loteprednol is used to treat redness and irritation associated with allergic conjunctivitis (inflammation of the membrane covering the white part of the eyes). It is also used after an eye surgery to help relieve pain and reduce inflammation of your eyes.
Instill Loteprednol eye drop exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label to the affected eye. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as an eye drop suspension, ointment or gel.
To use the eye ointment:
- Before applying this medicine, wash and dry your hands.
- With the index finger, pull the lower eyelid away from the infected eye.
- Tilt your head slightly backwards and look up.
- Apply 1 cm of the ointment to the inside of your lower eyelid. Avoid touching your infected eye with the tip of the container.
- Close your eye for 30 seconds.
- Wash your hands after each application.
To use the eye drop suspension or gel:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before using the eye drops.
- Tilt your head slightly backwards and look up. With the index finger, pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to form a pouch. Look upwards and instill the required number of drops inside your lower eyelid.
- Close your eyes for 30 seconds.
- Wipe any excess liquid from your face with a clean tissue.
- Wash your hands after each application.
Do not allow the tip of the dropper of this medicine to touch your eyes, eyelids or any other surface. Recap the eye drop immediately after use. If the eye drop becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in your eyes.
If you have been given any other eye drops or medicines to be used together with Loteprednol, wait for at least 5-15 minutes before using the other medicine.
Do not share your eye drop with anyone else.
Your doctor will advise you on the course of your treatment depending on your condition and response to the medication.
Instill the missed drop as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next drop, skip the missed drop and return to your normal dosing schedule.
Do not double your dose to make up for the missed drop.
Alert your doctor if you have the following condition:
- viral eye infection caused by herpes virus
- fungal infection of the eye
- other bacterial infection of the eye
as Loteprednol may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- history of herpes simplex infection (viral infection of the eye)
- glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
- have undergone cataract surgery
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Some brands of Loteprednol contain benzalkonium chloride as a preservative. This may discolour soft contact lenses and cause eye irritation.
If you are wearing contact lenses, you should remove it before using the eye drop. Wait for at least 15 minutes before reinserting your lenses.
Loteprednol may cause blurred vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to see clearly.
Other side effects include any of the following: stinging sensation, pain, or irritation in the eye, sensitivity of eyes to sunlight, headache, inflammation of the throat or mucous membranes in the nose.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking medicines for lowering blood pressure within the eyes.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store below 25°C, away from the reach of children.
Throw away any remaining medicines 4 weeks after opening. Mark the date of opening on the eye drop bottle so that you know when the bottle was opened.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
