Analgesia to nonintact skin

Not to be used on procedures involving digits, ears, nose, penis or scrotum due to risk of ischaemic tissue necrosis.

Caution when used on contaminated wounds, complex wounds or wounds >6 cm. Does not work on intact skin. Hepatic impairment. Risk of additive toxicity when used in patients who are receiving class I antiarrhythmics or local anaesthetics. Patients with asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, inflamed/damaged mucosa, heart disease, children <12 mth. Caution when used in smokers or patients with haemoglobin or enzyme abnormalities. Acutely-ill patients, elderly, debilitated patients. Pregnancy.

Dizziness, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, pruritus, pain, pallor. Acne, allergic reaction, anaphylactoid reaction, angioedema, blister, bronchospasm, bruising, confusion, dehydration, diaphoresis, hyperventilation, hypotension, infection, nervousness, paresthesia, petechiae, pharyngitis, somnolence, stupor, syncope, urticaria, vesiculobullous rash.

Additive and potentially synergistic effects when used with class I antiarrhythmics. Increased risk of methaemoglobin when used with methaemoglobin-inducing medications.

Description: Lidocaine and tetracaine are local anaesthetic agents that work by stabilising neuronal membranes and inhibiting sodium ion fluxes required for initiation and conduction of impulses. Epinephrine is a potent agonist on both α and β-adrenoceptors. It is usually used with local anaesthetics to slow down diffusion and prolong drug action.
Onset: 20-30 minutes.
