Letermovir is used to prevent infections and disease caused by a virus called cytomegalovirus (CMV) in patients who have recently had a bone marrow transplant.
Take Letermovir exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Letermovir must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not take Letermovir if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
Do not take this medicine with medicines used to treat high cholesterol levels, mood disorder, migraine, or blood clots. Please see the section “Can I take this with other medicines?” below for more information.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- severe liver disease
- kidney disease
- or combination of liver and kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
For as long as you are taking Letermovir, you may need to have regular blood tests to check your body’s response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have blood tests.
Letermovir may cause dizziness with spinning sensation or tiredness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: headache, cough, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain, swelling in the ankles, feet or legs.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swelling of the face, eyes or mouth, stop taking this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Letermovir with the following medicines:
- cholesterol-lowering medicines e.g. atorvastatin, simvastatin, rosuvastatin, pitavastatin
- medicines for migraine e.g. ergotamine, dihydroergotamine
- medicine for mood disorders e.g. pimozide
- blood-thinning medicine e.g. dabigatran
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any of these medicines:
- strong painkillers e.g. fentanyl, alfentanil
- medicines for heart disease e.g. quinidine, amiodarone
- medicine that can cause drowsiness or affect your concentration e.g. midazolam
- medicines used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. tacrolimus, sirolimus, ciclosporin
- medicines for diabetes e.g. glyburide, repaglinide, rosiglitazone
- certain antibiotics e.g. nafcillin
- medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizure) e.g. phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine
- medicines for TB (lung infection known as tuberculosis) e.g. rifampicin, rifabutin
- other medicine for mood disorder e.g. thioridazine
- gastric medicines e.g. omeprazole, pantoprazole
- medicine for fungal infections e.g. voriconazole
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. efavirenz, etravirine, nevirapine
- medicine for high blood pressure in the vessels in the lungs e.g. bosentan
- medicine for Hepatitis C infection e.g. simeprevir
- medicine to treat sleep disorder e.g. modafinil
- other cholesterol-lowering medicine e.g. gemfibrozil
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol and St. John’s wort.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
